The Alumni Association brought over 100 alumni and friends of UMass Amherst together in Springfield, MA to meet the university’s new leadership team and hear plans for economic growth and community collaboration with the flagship campus. Ron Grasso ’92, vice president of the Alumni Association, introduced Chancellor Robert C. Holub, along with Mark A. Fuller, dean of the Isenberg School of Management; Michael R. Malone, vice chancellor of Research and Engagement; and James V. Staros, provost.
Chancellor Holub spoke of the longstanding partnership with the city of Springfield and described some of the ongoing economic initiatives, including the collaboration between the Regional Employment Board of Hampden County and the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association. “We received a grant of $600,000 from the National Science Foundation to continue to promote this very important industry in the valley,” said Chancellor Holub.
Chancellor Holub also noted the partnership with Baystate Health and the medical research center, Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute. Upcoming projects also include a new UMass Amherst design center where architecture and landscape architecture students can work on projects related to Springfield redevelopment.
