University of Massachusetts Amherst is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding as Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863 following the passage of the federal Morrill Act. The year-long anniversary celebration will include a series of events for Founders’ Week, as well as programs and activities highlighting important historical milestones, events and people.

View a timeline of 150 years of UMass history.

In 1863, just a year after Congress enacted the Land-Grant Colleges Act, Massachusetts Agricultural College embarked on its mission to offer instruction to the state’s citizens in the “agricultural, mechanical, and military arts.” The school boasted a faculty of 4 and a student body of 56. As UMass Amherst celebrates its sesquicentennial in 2013, its full-time faculty numbers nearly 1,200 and the combined undergraduate/graduate student population is close to 28,000.

The principles that undergirded Mass Aggie’s founding continue to form the basis for UMass Amherst’s mission of preparing young people to make their way in life by stretching boundaries in all disciplines, from the physical and social sciences to the liberal arts. A new book, UMass Rising, looks at the school over the course of its first 150 years and mines that history to reveal not only how these principles have been fostered, but also the whys and whos.

Find out how to get the book.

Treasures of Japan: Gagaku and Bugaku Classical Music and Dance on Wednesday, October 16 at the Fine Arts Center.

The ancient and imperial court music of the gagaku orchestra and dances is the oldest orchestral tradition in the world – a style of music that has remained pure and unchanged over the centuries. Elegant and ethereal the music of gagaku is nearly always experienced in an almost otherworldly way with a unique and poetic sound that washes over you as it reflects the music of the cosmos.

Wednesday, October 16, 7:30 p.m.
Bowker Auditorium
$20, $15
Five College/GCC/STCC Students and Youth 17 & under: $10

What’s better than running a Nearly Naked Mile for a great cause on Friday, October 18?

The Nearly Naked Mile is a community service event focused on a large clothing drive for new or lightly-worn clothing. Participants donate articles of clothing and then proceed to run/walk a mile NEARLY naked in appropriate attire for this event (undergarments, bathing suit, boxer shorts, t-shirts, shorts, tank tops, and camisoles).

The run also demonstrates the challenges faced by over 16,000 homeless people across Massachusetts without appropriate clothing as cooler temperatures approach. All donations will support the Amherst Survival Center.
