Eleanor Bateman Alumni Scholar in Residence
The Eleanor Bateman Alumni Scholar in Residence Program was established in 1989 through an endowment from the Trustees of the University of Massachusetts Building Association. The program was named after Eleanor Bateman ’23, a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the UMass Building Association.
The Eleanor Bateman Program is designed to promote interaction between students and distinguished individuals in an informal setting. The goal of the program is to provide students with role models that exemplify the achievements of the university’s mission through professional accomplishments and public service. The two or three day visit usually includes class lectures, workshops and seminars for undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, the award recipient presents a lecture to the campus community, followed by a reception during which those in attendance have an opportunity to visit with the Bateman Scholar. The Bateman Suite in Van Meter Hall houses scholars-in-residence during their stay on campus.
